Actress Charlize Theron is facing backlash on Black Twitter, with many users on X criticizing her recent comments about not giving her children a “free ride” and expecting them to earn their way as they grow older.
The debate intensified following her April 30 appearance on Therapuss with Jake Shane, where the Oscar winner detailed her parenting approach centered on independence and accountability. Theron, a South Africa native who adopted her two daughters from South Africa, said she doesn’t plan to extend the financial privileges tied to her Hollywood success.
“They need to have jobs that support them,” she explained, adding that she doesn’t intend to provide lifelong financial backing.
“Your first car is going to be a Datsun because you’re going to crash it,” she added. “We need a little bit of experience, and we’re going to earn it.”
The actress, who adopted her daughters Jackson, 12, in 2012 and August, 9, in 2015, has long been candid about raising them as a single mother—a choice she’s described as deeply intentional. In a June 2025 appearance on Call Her Daddy, she told Alex Cooper it was “one of the healthiest decisions I ever made.”
Her latest comments quickly gained traction online, with many on social media criticizing what they view as a strict approach to parenting her two adopted children.
“The things they do to these black kids they adopt…,” one X user wrote.
“Remember she’s an Afrikaaner woman raised in South Africa during the apartheid regime,” added another.
“Adopting only black kids and making them earn it , mmhmm,” said someone else.
Theron is no stranger to scrutiny over her parenting style and family dynamic. As a high-profile celebrity, she’s likely accustomed to tuning out the criticism that often circulates on social media.
