Netflix’s “Survival of the Thickest” is preparing for its third and final season, and leading lady Mavis (Michelle Buteau) is making sure she exits in unapologetically bold, fashion-forward style.
Premiering July 2 on Netflix, the new season follows Mavis as she reconnects with her on-again, off-again love interest Luca, played by Marouane Zotti, while also navigating some brutally honest health advice from her new doctor, Dr. Terri, portrayed by Wanda Sykes, about life beyond her 20s.
Buteau took center stage at the Netflix Is a Joke Festival on May 6 alongside Sykes, who helped unveil the new teaser trailer and first-look images for season three. The newly released images tease a star-studded lineup of guest appearances from names like D. L. Hughley, Ashley Graham, Ronny Chieng, Jenna Lyons, Kandi Burruss, and Ice-T joining the season three cast, among many others.
Landing a third and final season of “”Survival of the Thickest” has been a dream come true for Buteau, who described the renewal as “an everyday birthday gift.” Buteau teased that the final season will be bold, emotional, and completely unapologetic.
Fans also have another reason to celebrate: both Buteau and co-creator Danielle Sanchez-Witzel will make their directorial debuts this season, directing Episodes 5 and 3, respectively.
Since season one, “Survival of the Thickest” has followed Mavis, a stylish, plus-size Black woman navigating love, heartbreak, friendship, and self-confidence while chasing her dreams in fashion. Inspired by Michelle Buteau’s acclaimed essay collection, the series centers on Mavis building her career as a stylist and designer while learning to fully embrace herself with the support of her chosen family, body positivity, and signature glam. Now, season three is shaping up to be the ultimate farewell — with fashion taking center stage more than ever before.
