A winning lottery ticket came between a Charlotte couple after a woman recently sued her now ex-girlfriend for allegedly stealing her earnings.
Jasmine Watkins filed a lawsuit over claims she purchased several lottery tickets from a convenience store and gave them to her ex-girlfriend to hold. However, she says upon realizing there was a winning ticket in the bunch, her girlfriend stole the ticket and claimed it for herself.
In her lawsuit, Watkins claims she bought the lottery tickets and used the small winnings to purchase the ticket in question. She also claims there’s surveillance video of her buying it to prove that she was alone. But her ex-girlfriend claims she was at the store when Watkins bought the ticket, and they both bought other lottery tickets that day.
Watkins says when the couple realized she won, they made plans to go to Raleigh together to claim her prize. But according to the lawsuit, her now ex-girlfriend took her ticket and went to Raleigh and claimed the prize for herself.
The North Carolina Education Lottery Commission told WSOC that they received a claim for a winning Lucky for Life ticket and “the claim was under review when the lottery learned there was a legal dispute over who the owner of the winning ticket is.”
The representative said the commission has not yet given out the winnings as they wait on direction from the court ruling.
