A woman in Florida was arrested after she tried to do the right thing by turning her husband’s guns into the police.
32-year-old Courtney Irby was arrested after she brought her estranged husband’s guns to the cops in fear he would use them against her. Amid the couple’s messy divorce, she tried to turn in the firearms after her husband, Joseph Irby was sent to jail for trying to run her over with a car.
Courtney said she went to Joseph’s apartment in Lakeland, Florida, searched for his guns and brought them to cops.
“He wasn’t going to turn them in, so I am doing it,” she told the cops, according to the Lakeland Ledger.
But when officers contacted Jospeph at the Polk County Jail, he demanded to press charges against his soon-to-be ex-wife. Courtney was charged with armed burglary of a dwelling and two counts of grand theft of a firearm.
“We have to safeguard every citizen’s rights,” Police Chief Ruben Garcia said.
She was released on Friday after a judge ordered her bail to be set at $5,000 on Friday. She spent five days and six nights in jail. US Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Fla, is requesting that State Attorney Brian Haas not prosecute the battered wife.
“She was actively protecting herself and her family from an estranged husband who had not turned over his firearms to law enforcement, and was arrested for it,” the Congresswoman wrote in a blog post.
“We should be outraged by her arrest, and Irby should not be prosecuted by the local State Attorney’s office.”
