Tina Turner will have her life told on Broadway in the new musical Tina: The Tina Turner Musical. But despite all the success she’s achieved throughout her career, the R&B/Rock diva still isn’t sure if she “could ever forgive” her ex-husband Ike Turner.
The 79-year-old recently did an interview with The New York Times at her home in Switzerland where she shared how happy and carefree she is despite once living “a terrible life”.
“I don’t necessarily want to be a ‘strong’ person,’” she told the Times. “I had a terrible life. I just kept going. You just keep going, and you hope that something will come.” Ms. Turner then gestures to her extravagant home in Switzerland, adding, “This came.”
Turner also briefly touched on her abusive marriage with the late Ike Turner and revealed the resentment she still harbors for him.
“I don’t know if I could ever forgive all that Ike ever did to me,” Turner said. Then she added, “Ike’s dead. So we don’t have to worry about him.”
Turner also shared how carefree she is after 50 years of performing and no desire to end her retirement.
“I don’t sing. I don’t dance. I don’t dress up,” she said.
Turner explained how she grew tired of having to please everyone else.
“I was just tired of singing and making everybody happy,” she said. “That’s all I’d ever done in my life.”
The rock queen is promoting the U.S. debut of her upcoming Broadway musical, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical. The show first made its debut in London before coming to the states, according to Playbill. Actress Adrienne Warren stars as the singer and will be joined by Daniel J. Watts as Ike Turner. Acclaimed playwright Katori Hall is excited to see her book come to life in the musical.
“Tina is such a powerful being—beyond an icon,” Hall told the caston their first day of rehearsal. “[Tina] always said she wanted to use the poison that she had to take in her life in order to create medicine for others. I want you guys in this rehearsal to embrace the responsibility. The responsibility of telling this story that is going to transform people.”
