A Mexican restaurant in Georgia is facing backlash after one of their employees ‘mistakenly’ referred to a black female customer named Nyjah as the n-word.
Nyjah Vest and a group of friends were dining at El Porton Mexican Restaurant in Duluth, Georgia on September 7 when they reportedly received a receipt that included the total of the food purchased by a customer they deemed as “ni**er”.
The waiter who took their order reportedly wrote each group member’s first name’s down in order to issue separate checks for their meals. But it was his interpretation of the spelling of Nyjah’s name that had the group scratching their heads.
“I even looked at him and asked, ‘are you sure?’” The waiter, who asked to remain unnamed, told FOX 5 Atlanta. “Even him leaving with that order, I kind of felt uncomfortable as well, because we all know that’s not a word to just throw around.”
The employee who typed in the orders had reportedly double-checked with the waiter to make sure the spelling of the customer’s name was correct, to which he confirmed it was. But after receiving her check for the meal, Nyjah was disturbed to see what the waiter titled her as.
The waiter has since apologized for racially charged check receipt. But Vest is still confused as to how the mishap occurred, to begin with.
“I don’t know how the n-word got put on my order,” Vest told the local news station. “I had my (debit) card there with my name on it as well, and I got rung up as the n-word.
“If somebody told me their name was that, I wouldn’t even acknowledge it,” she continued, “I would think they’re prank calling me or something. It’s a joke.”
On Sunday, Vest returned to the restaurant where she received a refund for her food and an apology from the owner.
“I really feel disrespected, especially because I’ve eaten here [before],” she concluded.
