Washington DC
America’s capital city is also on the verge of sinking. Research from 2015 found that Washington DC will drop more than 6 inches (15 centimeters) in the next 100 years, CNN reports. But extractions and rising sea levels is not the cause of the city sinking. An ice sheet from the last ice age that melted thousands of years ago has researchers under the impression that the area is gradually sinking. Though the process could last thousands of years, rising sea levels in the Chesapeake Bay could cause additional problems.
