A Mexican college student is lucky to be alive after she fell 80 feet from a balcony while trying to practice an extreme yoga pose.
23-year-old Alexa Terrazas was known to use the guardrail on her sixth-floor apartment as a prop for practicing extreme yoga poses. But her daredevil yogi lifestyle almost cost her her life on Saturday afternoon after she slipped and landed on the pavement outside her building in the northeastern Mexican state of Nuevo León, El Imparcial reports.
The health and nutrition student at Tecnológico de Monterrey underwent 11 hours of surgery while being treated by paramedics with the Red Cross and Nuevo León Civil Protection. As of Monday, she was listed in critical condition, having suffered fractures and broken bones in both legs and arms, hips and her head.
Doctors had to “reconstruct” her legs and told the young yogi that it could be three years before she walks again, El Imparcial reports. A Facebook page has been created asking people to donate blood to help her but a relative of Terrazas tweeted on Sunday that she was not in need of blood.
Neighbors of the college student claim they often saw Terrazas practicing the upside-down pose over the edge of her terrace. Meanwhile, the Nuevo León Attorney General’s Office has confirmed that the woman’s fall was an accident.
