A 6-month-old baby was found alive but extremely dehydrated after spending days inside of a Michigan motel room with her dead parents.
The baby, identified as Skylah, was found on Friday around noon after a Michigan State Trooper responded to a request for a well-being check at the Rodeway Inn in Whitehall. The officer found the bodies of 26-year-old Jessica Bramer, of Grand Rapids, and 28-year-old Christian Reed, of Marne, WOOD-TV reports.
Skylah was taken to a local hospital before being flown to the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids where she was initially listed in critical condition, the Associated Press and the Detroit Free Press report. She is doing better and is expected to make a full recovery, WOOD-TV reports.
The baby is said to have been alone in the motel room for “a period of days,” local station WZZM 13 reports.
According to police, drug paraphernalia was found by the couple’s bodies, but it has not been confirmed what the exact cause of death was. An autopsy was performed but will take 30 days to determine an immediate cause of death for the parents, WZZM reports.
Family members of Bramer and Reed said the two had been in and out of jail were staying at the motel for about a week before they died, WOOD-TV reports. Skylah’s grandparents had contacted Children’s Protective Services back in January due to concern about the baby’s welfare, WOOD-TV reports.
