A Georgia mother is facing murder charges after her 3-month-old baby died as a result of a fight between her and another woman.
26-year-old Karen Lashun Harrison was charged with felony murder, first-degree cruelty to children, second-degree cruelty to children, simple battery and affray (fighting), according to the Moultrie Police Department (MPD).
The charges stem from a physical altercation Harrison got into while holding her newborn baby on July 19 at Thomas Beauty Supply, 614 1st Ave SE. In surveillance footage of the fight, Harrison is seen dropping the 3-month-old onto the pavement while she proceeded to fight 26-year-old Carneata Clark, Lt. Freddie Williams with MPD said.
Witnesses can be seen rushing to break up the fight while one woman quickly grabbed the baby off the ground. The child was taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center on July 20 for a head injury but later died from his injuries.
In addition to Harrison’s long list of charges, Clark was also charged in the incident with false statements and writings and obstruction of an officer for her involvement in the case, according to police. Harrison originally told police that the child had fallen from a friend of the family’s arms and got the head injury, police said. Clark, the friend of the family, gave the same story to police.
Upon reviewing the surveillance footage of the fight, it was clear that both women were lying. Harrison was denied bond Tuesday morning while Clark bonded out of jail on a $5,000 bond. The child’s body was sent for an autopsy while police conduct an ongoing investigation with more arrests possible, WALB reports.
