Amid the promotion of his upcoming documentary “Free Meek”, Philly rapper Meek Mill announced his business partnership with Lids.
The rapper and prison reform advocate recently became the latest corporate co-owner of Lids. Meek spoke with Business Insider on Wednesday and detailed his partnership with the sports apparel retailer. As part of the company’s ownership team, Meek will also head Lid’s creative strategy.
Meek shared his plans to use his creative strategist role to further infuse hip-hop culture with the apparel company.
“I would definitely love to involve our whole culture in Lids more,” Meek explains. “Because, first thing we do in merchandise in hip-hop, we sell hats, we sell all types of things.”
Meek’s first curated release of limited edition hats will be exclusively available at Lids this August. Meek’s friendship with businessman Micheal Rubin helped lead him to the new business opportunity. Rubin is also a part of the Lid’s ownership team.
In addition to Rubin, Meek also credits JAY-Z for inspiring him to make bigger and better business moves.
“I’ve seen JAY-Z, and then I’ve watched other artists who came up around his time. He actually built something. He built businesses, and he built things that made him become the man who he is, that we could call a billionaire guy,” he said. “That’s why I’m working the way I’m working now to build a foundation for myself too.”
