Rapper turned actor veterans Will Smith and Queen Latifah are officially teaming up for a hip hop “Romeo & Juliet” musical that is set to make its way on Netflix.
The Oscar-nominated actors both made their start as emcees in the late 80s and soon when on to become sitcom stars in “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” and “Living Single”. However, the two Hollywood stars have yet to work together on the big screen. But now all of that is set to change with the new hip hop musical the two award-winning actors are developing with Netflix.
The movie is set up to be a contemporary musical take on the Shakespeare classic “Romeo and Juliet”, Deadline reports. The setting takes place in the urban city life of New York. The well-known love story follows Juliet, a young waitress from Brooklyn who falls in love with an aspiring musician from a wealthy family. Their unconventional romance forces them to confront their life choices.
According to Deadline, the popular streaming platform teamed up with Latifah’s Flavor Unit Entertainment and 25/7 Productions along with Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment attached to executive produce. Brooklyn bord Algerian-American filmmaker and rapper, Solvan “Slick” Naim, is set to direct the film, which he co-wrote with Flavor Unit’ Dave Broome.
