Actress Gabrielle Union and NBA Champion Dwyane Wade, among others, reportedly helped pay for the funeral for the 15-year-old gay teen who committed suicide after being bullied at school.
Nigel Shelby had been suffering from homophobic bullying and depression when he took his life on April 18. His story was spread widely on social media and led celebrities like Wade and Union to lend their support, TMZ reports.
Shelby’s mom, Camika Quintay, shared video clips of the funeral on Saturday after a GoFundMe that was set up for Shelby raised over $39,000, surpassing the $26,000 goal. Other celebrities like actor Ludacris, singer Janelle Monae, and actress Lena Waithe also contributed to the funeral expenses, The Grio reports.
The Alabama teen was a Huntsville High School student who had come out two years ago, his mom told WAFF. Quintay believes her son suffered from depression and emotional issues due to his sexuality, which led to his suicide.
